Patient Education Miscommunications: Conclusion

The key takeaway from current research related to patient education, is that a patient's ability to recall medical information is not simply a personal failing. It is heavily influenced by the dynamics of the provider's visit; how much the patient gets to speak, how much information is delivered at once, and which communication techniques are used.

Systemic change is needed. Until then? ThriveIn’s staff of Registered Nurses can help to support you and your loved one by attending appointments, listening and asking questions on behalf of the family/support people, and setting up family/support people meetings/communications after appointments to ensure all new information is accurately communicated to everyone, including making sure the patient themselves understands their current state of health and all needs. We can also have those follow-up conversations with providers, and translate that information back to the client and their family/support people/caregivers.

Would healthcare navigation improve the life of someone you care for, and eliminate any burden placed on family/support people to attend all appointments and learn how to navigate healthcare and education? If so, schedule a consultation with ThriveIn today!
